Tips for Staying Quit

How to get through today without smoking.

1. Make a list of personal reasons for quitting. Go over your reasons each time you have an urge to smoke.

2. Sign a no-smoking contract.

3. Post “No Smoking” signs in your home and car.

4. Ease cravings by drinking more water. Avoid drinks associated with smoking like alcohol, coffee, and caffeinated drinks.

5. Substitute sugarless gum, hard candy, flavored toothpicks, and carrot or celery sticks when the urge to smoke hits.

6. Tell family members, friends and co-workers how they can help you stay quit.

7. Stay busy: take a walk or stretch break.

8. Call the SOS Quitline (800-784-8669).

9. Practice the 4 D’s:

Delay
Drink Water
Do Something Else
Deep Breathe

10. Say out loud, “I can do this, I can quit smoking!
